Breast Implant Removal

There are many reasons a woman may choose to have breast implants removed. If you need your breast implants removed and/or exchanged, trust only an experienced surgeon for the procedure. Michael Schwartz, M.D., is a board-certified facial plastic surgeon and diplomate of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery who offers breast implant removal to women who live in and around Los Angeles, Pasadena and the surrounding communities of California.

What is Breast Implant Removal?

Breast implant removal surgeries are as simple as they sound: a procedure to remove breast implants. With a breast implant removal, the breasts can return to completely natural or someone may choose to get new implants in exchange for the ones being removed or have a lift. Breast implant removal surgery is a breast enhancement procedure.

Why Do Women Undergo Breast Implant Removal?

There is no one reason women choose to have breast implants removed. The decision to have breast implants removed can be aesthetic, personal or medically-based. Some of the most common physical reasons a woman may choose to get implants removed include:

  • Implant rupturing
  • Implant rippling
  • Implant leaking
  • Implant hardening
  • Capsular contracture
  • Infection in the implant site

Some of the aesthetic and personal reasons someone may choose to undergo implant removal include:

  • Implants have shifted in position
  • Implants are no longer the desired size
  • Implants are asymmetrical
  • Implants moved close to one another (the “uniboob”)
  • Breasts have changed size due to aging, pregnancy or weight change
  • Personal preference to have implants removed
  • Sagging implants

The Breast Implant Removal Procedure

Most commonly, Dr. Schwartz will remove the implants through the same incisions with which they were placed. This is to minimize any scarring on the body and promote a more beautiful result. Through that incision, the implant is removed and the next phase of the procedure begins.

Prior to your procedure, you and Dr. Schwartz will discuss your goals for the procedure. Most frequently, women undergoing breast implant removal want the implants exchanged. If this is the case, Dr. Schwartz will then perform a breast implant replacement procedure at the same time of the removal. If you’ve chosen not to replace your current implants, Dr. Schwartz will correct any issues, such as sagging or unevenness in the natural breasts, before completing the procedure.

How is the recovery following Breast Implant Removal?

Breast implant removal procedure recovery is much easier than the recovery from breast implant surgery. It is recommended to take one week off from work and possibly less. We will discuss further details of the healing process with you at your consultation.

Am I A Good Candidate for Breast Implant Removal?

If you relate to one of more of the reasons listed for getting breast implant removal, you are likely a strong candidate. Breast implant removal, if not medically necessary, is a completely elective choice. If you wish to have your implants removed, you are a candidate for the removal procedure.
